The Chief Executive Officer of the state-owned Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), Paul Cheong, has filed a GY$10 million defamation lawsuit against Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed.

Mr Cheong, in court papers filed by his lawyer Rajendra Jaigobin, denied Mr Mohamed’s assertion that he is part of a company that has allegedly benefited from contracts.

According to the statement of claim, Mr Cheong is asking the High Court to award more than GY$10 million in damages for libel published by Mr Mohamed on the Facebook page, Team Mohamed’s, and uploaded to Facebook on the 11th August, 2026.

Other High Court reliefs being sought are an injunction restraining Mr Mohamed from further publishing or causing to be published on the Facebook page, Team Mohamed’s, or any other Facebook page or on any social media platform, or through any other medium the same defamatory words or any similar words or publications defamatory of Mr Cheong.

Mr Cheong is also seeking an order directing Mr Mohamed to immediately remove all defamatory publications from the Facebook page, Team Mohamed’s.

According to the court papers, Mr Cheong denied that he was the owner of L’Heureuse Construction Services or L’Heureuse Construction Services Inc.

“He neither made a bid for government road contracts nor has been awarded a contract,” the court papers state.

Mr Cheong says in the statement of claim that Mr Mohamed’s allegations are “entirely false, untrue and defamatory” of him, and they were published by the defendant maliciously to damage his reputation and standing.
