The Maritime Authority of Suriname (MAS) has given Canawaima Management Company NV a final opportunity to remedy the remaining deficiencies on board the MV Canawaima.
This is evident from a letter from the MAS dated August 7, 2026, to the terminal manager of Canawaima Management Company NV in Southdrain, Nickerie.
The letter follows earlier correspondence dated 26 July 2026, in which the company was instructed to send a plan of action regarding the inspection report of the MV Canawaima to the MAS within one week of receipt.
On August 5, 2026, the MAS conducted another inspection on board. During this re-inspection, it was found that a majority of the previously identified deficiencies had not yet been remedied.
Last opportunity for action plan
The MAS has therefore given the company a final opportunity to submit a plan of action.
This plan must contain a clear timetable for rectifying the identified deficiencies, carrying out the necessary major repairs, and the planned drydocking of the vessel.
In addition, the maritime authority has determined that various safety matters must be in order by August 13 at the latest.
This concerns, among other things, the full presence and readiness for use of all legally prescribed safety equipment.
In addition, all fire-fighting equipment must be present, inspected, and immediately ready for use, and the fire detection and fire-fighting system must be fully operational.
Certificates and technical inspection also required
The MAS further requires that all crew members possess valid Basic Safety Training and Crowd Management certificates.
If certain certificates are not yet available, written proof must be provided that the relevant training courses will be completed within one month.
In addition, an independent, recognized ship surveyor must carry out an inspection and assessment of the watertightness of the hull and the cofferdams of the vessel.
A positive inspection report is a condition for potentially obtaining a temporary exemption from the mandatory dry-docking.
Boating ban from August 14 if no measures are taken
The MAS has explicitly pointed out to Canawaima Management Company NV the consequences if the stated requirements are not met in a timely manner.
If the required measures have not been implemented by 13 August 2026 at the latest, the MV Canawaima will be subject to a sailing ban effective from 14 August 2026 at 00:00.
According to the MAS, the navigation ban remains in effect until the requirements set to ensure safe navigation have been fully met.
The maritime authority hereby indicates that the safety of the vessel, the crew, and shipping traffic is paramount. Canawaima Management Company NV has been called upon to take the necessary measures without delay.
