Private sector calls on political parties, police to take anti-violence measures

In the wake of the fiery violence that erupted Monday night in Sophia that left several vehicles burnt, the Private Sector Commission (PSC) on Tuesday called on political parties to rein in their supporters and asked police to probe the incidents.

“The Private Sector Commission is disappointed at the sporadic outbreak of unrest and violence which followed a peaceful voting process and calls upon the leaders of all political parties to control their supporters and publicly eschew violence of any sort. 

“The Commission calls too upon the Guyana Police Force to investigate fully all reported incidents and to maintain a visible presence which could serve as a deterrent to those who would take advantage of the current situation to engage in unlawful acts,”  said the business organisation.

The Commission, which also fielded local observers, said it firmly believed that the political leaders have a responsibility to the citizenry to ensure their safety at this time and must be held accountable for any breakdown in law and order.

The PSC urged Guyanese not allow loyalty to any political party to lead them into contributing to a breakdown of law and order.

 The Commission also called for patience and calm as “we await the announcement of election results by the Guyana Elections Commission which is the only entity authorised to release the results of Elections 2015.”

The first batch of election results were scheduled to be announced at 11 AM Tuesday.
