Former West Indian Captain and batsman, Alvin Isaac Kallicharran, whose family were known to be strong supporters of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) have added to the long list of prominent persons who have come out in support of the Opposition party, A Partnership for National Unity +Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC).
The renowned cricketer who did Guyana proud during the more glorious days of the West Indies; 1972- 1981, has endorsed the Coalition claiming that they are the best option for Guyana and the development of sports in the country.
He hails from Port Mourant, East Berbice which is the home-village of Founder-Leader of the incumbent People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and President of Guyana, Dr. Cheddi Jagan whose name is being featured across the political divide in today’s elections campaign 18 years after he died in office.
In a public disclosure, the sportsman who spent much time overseas related that he has heard the concerns of the people he encountered and has determined that enough is not being done for the country’ sports sector.
He said that, “After a very long time I was able to spend quality time in Guyana and travel across the country coaching youngsters and listening to the issues affecting everyone as it relates to sports in general and cricket in particular.”
Kallicharran said, “I am convinced that a lot more can be done if government partners with the various organisations for the promotion of sports rather than trying to take control of it. After careful thought I have decided to endorse the APNU+AFC because I think it is time for change.”
He opined that, “After 23 years it is clear that sports has been neglected in Guyana.”
The former batsman said that citizens heard, “enough promises from this (PPP/C) -government and what they will do after this election when for the past two decades they had the opportunity to deliver on these promises and fail.”
The cricket hero implored that, “It is time for change.”
