A man allegedly beat his mother and set their house ablaze at an East Coast Demerara village on Saturday, according to well-placed sources.
The wooden house was destroyed before fire fighters arrived on the scene at 671 Foulis Housing Scheme. They managed to prevent the the fire from spreading to a neighbouring wooden house.
No one was reported injured. Four persons are homeless, according to the sources.
Investigators are working on the theory that the alleged perpetrator is a drug addict.
A senior police officer told Demerara Waves Online News that the 19-year old man lit the house while his parents were at police station making a report against him.
He is believed to be hiding in a nearby cane field.
