A Guyana Police Force detective sergeant has been placed under close arrest for allegedly shooting one of several men after he was attacked with a cutlass, police said Monday.
“He discharged a round from his force-issued 9mm pistol in their direction, during which a 37-year-old gold miner of Yarrowkabra Creek, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, sustained a suspected gunshot injury to his right leg,” police said in a statement.
Police said the incident occurred on Sunday at about 5 p.m., at Chanta Creek, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
At the time of the incident, police said the detective was at the creek with family members when he had a misunderstanding with several males and was attacked.
Police said the injured man was picked up by relatives along with police and rushed to the Mackenzie Hospital, where he was admitted and was in a stable condition.
