A 26-year old woman, who allegedly suffocated her seven-year old daughter, was Monday arraigned on a charge of murder, police said.
Sarah Elizabeth Shivpersaud, a domestic worker of Fyrish Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
Police said the charge was laid in relation to the alleged murder committed on her daughter, Isabella Dabidyal, a student of Cropper Primary School, of Fyrish Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
Ms Shiverpersaud appeared on Monday, April 13, 2026, at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Michelle Mathias, where the charge was read to her.
She was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to May 12, 2026.
Police previously reported that she was found in her house with the motionless body of her daughter and her semi-conscious 21-month old son in bed. She was seen with knife wounds behind her heels.
They were taken to a hospital where her son was treated and discharged. She was admitted and later discharged.
The woman had told investigators that she became frustrated after her husband deserted them and she and her children had nothing to eat.
