Director General of Guyana’s Civil Defence Commission (CDC), Colonel Nazrul Hussain has received the Inter-American Defence Board (IADB) medal in recognition of his outstanding leadership, professionalism, and enduring commitment to advancing disaster risk management, humanitarian coordination, and hemispheric cooperation.
The CDC said the honour also acknowledges Mr Hussain’s pivotal role in the successful planning and execution of the Mechanism for Disaster Cooperation Exercise (MECODEX) 2025, hosted in Guyana.
The exercise significantly strengthened institutional ties between the IADB, its member countries, and international partners, while reaffirming the Board’s commitment to its hemispheric mission of promoting cooperation and coordinated assistance across the region.
The award ceremony followed the March 24 Ordinary Meeting in the “Simón Bolívar Room” of the historic building of the Organisation of American States (OAS) commenmorating the 84th anniversary of the creation of the IIADB.
“The IADB Medal, its highest distinction, was conferred upon fifteen (15) distinguished individuals and institutions from across the hemisphere in recognition of their exceptional contributions to strengthening security and defence,” the board said in a statement.
Among the other awardees were the Secretary General of the OAS, Albert Ramdin, the Assistant Secretary General Ambassador Laura Gil, as well as ministers of defence and generals.
Also in attendance at the ceremony was Guyana’s Ambassador to the United States of America and Permanent Representative to the Organisation of American States, Samuel Hinds.
He is a former president and prime minister of Guyana.
