A post mortem into the death of a 30-year-old South Haslington man who was in police custody, revealed that he died from peritonitis.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh found during the post mortem on Friday that Otis John Jordan Payne died as a result of an infection of the abdomen due to a perforated stomach ulcer.

Police said specimens were taken from the body for a toxicology report.

Payne died on March 24 while in custody at the Cove and John Police Station, East Coast Demerara.

The post mortem was conducted at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation mortuary.

The body was subsequently handed over to the family, police also said.

The opposition A Partnership for National Unity, which has been paying attention to Payne’s death, and the GPF said this week that two members of the force were placed under close arrest as part of an investigation by that law enforcement agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility.
