A labourer of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo has been chopped to death and the prime suspect arrested, police said on Monday.
Investigators said 29-year-old Herbert Hartman was murdered between Sunday, March 8 about 8:30 p.m. and Monday, March 9 about 6:00 a.m.
A 23-year-old construction worker was contacted, arrested and remained in police custody assisting with investigations.
“It is alleged that the suspect later went to the deceased’s residence armed with a cutlass where an altercation occurred,” the Guyana Police Force said in a statement.
Hartman’s body was found about 6 a.m. on Monday, “lying motionless in a pool of blood at his residence with several chop wounds about his body.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased and the suspect were known to each other.
“Enquiries further disclosed that the men were earlier at a worksite in the area where they were allegedly imbibing alcohol when an argument reportedly ensued between them, during which the suspect allegedly threatened the deceased before leaving the location,” according to the Guyana Police Force statement.
