The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Sunday said a policeman was placed under close arrest to pave the way for an internal probe into his alleged behaviour with an assault rifle on a roadway in Port Kaituma in Region 1 (Barima-Waini).
“The rank featured in the video has since been placed under close arrest and the Office of Professional Responsibility has been instructed to commence a detailed investigation immediately,” that civilian law enforcement agency said in a statement.
No mention was made of the source of the video, but the police statement was issued one hour after Team Mohamed’s posted a video of a civilian-dressed man in Port Kaituma threatening to shoot someone on the roadway. Three shots were fired, one while a peacemaker attempted to take away the weapon from him, and two others while the man was walking with the weapon. Two women were also seen in the video trying to calm the man.
The force said Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken immediately “ordered a thorough investigation” into the circumstances surrounding the incident after a video circulated on social media involving a policeman stationed in Region 1.

The GPF said the matter was being treated with the utmost seriousness and the video would be used as part of the probe. “The contents of the video form part of the ongoing investigation which will determine the full extent of both disciplinary and criminal actions to be taken,” the force said.
The GPF says it remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and accountability and further information will be provided at the appropriate stage as the investigation progresses.
The caption of the video on Team Mohamed’s Facebook page stated that We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) political party was calling “on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into these infractions committed by the police” in Region One. It indicated that there was poor supervision of members of the police force there.
