A Mining Engineer of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), who was shot dead Friday afternoon, might have been carrying a large quantity of cash, according to usually reliable sources.
Trevor Abrams was gunned down on the Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara about 11 AM Friday.
While it is unclear whether he had any money on him, GGMC officials confirmed that he was given a cheque for GUY$600,000 to cash prior to his departure for the fields.
Police said Abrams,32, of Grove, East Bank Demerara was driving at Diamond Public Road, when another motor vehicle drove up and cut off his path.
“Two men armed with firearms exited the vehicle and discharged several shots at Trevor Abrams hitting him about the body and escaped,” police said in a statement. Abrams was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment and the GGMC expressed shock at the passing of Abrams who joined the regulatory agency in May 2012.
As such, the Ministry and the Commission are calling on the relevant agencies to conduct a thorough investigation that led to the untimely demise of Mr. Abrams,” they said in a statement.
Natural Resources Minister, Robert Persaud said “I wish to convey the condolences of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission and my personal sympathy to his family and colleagues. We have you in our thoughts during this time of bereavement.”
