Ali hints at another cash grant before year-end

President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday night signaled that Guyanese could receive another cash grant payout before year-end should his party be re-elected at next Monday’s general and regional elections.

“I heard PM (Prime Minister) told them next year is the next grant. If you behave yourself you get it this year,” he told a People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) election campaign community meeting at Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

Just days before Guyanese go to the polls to elect a new government of their choice, Dr Ali said it was likely that Guyanese could cash in on a grant before year-end.

He emphasised that the population could expect a bright and happy Christmas, but gave no further clues about when exactly the money would be paid and how much. “We will have a beautiful Christmas. Look at the smile on my face and know that you will have enjoyable holiday,” he said.

Payment of the first cash grant of GY$100,000 each to more than 600,000 Guyanese 18 years and older began in late 2024 and continued during the first quarter of 2025.

The People’s Progressive Party Civic’s (PPPC) main political rival, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), continues to claim credit for floating the idea of a cash grant, saying that initially the Ali-led administration had dismissed the idea as economically unfeasible but later made the payments as a result of political pressure.
