Estranged wife gunned down, son shot, husband commits suicide

The injured boy being taken to hospital

A man shot dead his wife and shot his son before committing suicide with the same 9mm hand gun late on Tuesday morning on Charlotte and Bourda streets, Georgetown, police said.

“The suspect also shot and wounded his 10-year-old son before he subsequently shot and killed himself at the scene,” the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said in a statement.

The woman has been identified as 36-year-old Teekadai Atiya Solomon and her husband as 36-year-old Alroy Solomon. Police said their 10-year old son was shot to the left side of his lower chest and has been hospitalised and in a stable condition. He was picked up by public-spirited persons and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, police added.

Police said the woman received two gunshots to her right side abdomen, one to her right index finger, one to her left arm, two to her chest, two to her forehead, one to her right hip and one to her right leg. The man was found in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to his temple area.

According to police, Alroy turned up at about 11:50 am at Lot 199 Charlotte and Bourda streets, Georgetown where his wife was residing after she moved out two months ago from their North East La Penitence residence with their son due to “domestic issues”.

Investigators were informed that the woman was at her apartment with her son, when the suspect showed up in the area in a black motor vehicle (Registration Number GUY 94) and parked in front of the apartment building.

“The 36-year-old man then reportedly exited the vehicle and ran into the compound, after which the woman was heard screaming, followed by several suspected gunshots.

The victim ran out of the yard and was followed by the suspect, who discharged several rounds at her, causing her to fall on the ground in front of her apartment, south on Charlotte Street, where she remained motionless,” police added.

Crime scene investigators recovered a 9mm pistol, containing a magazine and 6 live 9mm rounds of ammunition. One live 9mm round and a matching spent shell were also found next to the suspect.
