Three dead, one injured in Soesdyke-Linden Highway crash

Three persons died after the car they were travelling in slammed into the back of a parked lorry on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway in the vicinity of Loo-Creek, police said.

Those who perished in the accident that occurred on August 16 at about 1:30 am are Marenzo Campbell, Keiron Wells and Shelly Joseph, all of Hyde Park, Timehri.

Campbell and Wells were pronounced dead on arrival at the Linden Hospital Complex and Joseph succumbed while receiving treatment.

Police also said the driver, Mairo Campbell, was admitted to the hospital suffering from a dislocated left foot and a displaced left eye. His condition is regarded as serious but stable, police added.

The Guyana Police Force said the accident involved a parked lorry, bearing licence number, GAF 2776, and motor car, PAH 9911, owned and driven by 26-year-old Mairo Campbell from Hyde Park Timehri, along with the now three deceased occupants of the car.

Investigators were informed that the lorry was proceeding north along the western drive lane of the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, in the vicinity of Loo Creek, laden with wooden materials.

The driver parked the lorry on the western side of the highway, after the right side front wheel tyre ‘blew out’.

Police said “at the time, no reflectors” were placed to the rear, side and front of the parked lorry to alert other road users.

“The car was proceeding north along the western driving lane at a fast rate and collided with the rear of the Lorry.

As a result of the impact, the driver, along with the three occupants, received injuries to their heads and other parts of their bodies,” police said.

While a breathalyser test did not find any trace of alcohol in the lorry driver’s system, police said further checks revealed that he was not the holder of a licence to drive a lorry.
