United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday – Guyana’s 59th independence anniversary – credited President Irfaan Ali with a marked overhaul of the South American nation’s economy, but suggested that more needs to be done in the areas of governance and rule of law.
“As Guyana continues to experience historic economic transformation, under the leadership of Guyanese President Ali, we emphasize the importance of transparent governance and the rule of law that benefits all citizens,” Mr Rubio said in his Independence Day message to Guyana.
The main opposition People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), in its Independence Day message, complained again about mismanagement, corruption, incompetence, political domination and oppression by Dr Ali’s incumbent People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP)-led administration.
“Such actions undermine the country’s democracy, social cohesion, ethnic harmony, and political stability,” the PNCR said.
For its part, the PPP said in its Independence Day message that, “through careful and prudent management of our resources, and by fostering inclusive growth and equal opportunity, the PPP is committed to the task of building a Guyana where every citizen has a fair chance to thrive.”
The Secretary of State said the US reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to its partnership with Guyana, grounded in shared democratic values and a mutual dedication to regional security and prosperity.
Mr Rubio said the US remains committed to advancing cooperation with Guyana in combating transnational crime, promoting energy and economic security, and encouraging responsible private sector investment.
The Secretary of State said the US sends its sincere wishes for continued peace, democratic progress, and prosperity for all Guyanese people.
Guyanese will vote in general elections on September 1, 2025 in an election that will pit Dr Ali’s People’s Progressive Party (PPP) against the People’s National Congress Reform-led A Partnership for National Unity.
The Alliance For Change is expected to contest the polls separately if there is no last-minute unity deal with the PNCR/APNU.
APNU and AFC, then a coalition partner, had been accused by the PPPC of conspiring with persons at GECOM to rig the Region Four election results to retain power.
A national vote recount, however, showed that the results were almost identical to the Statements of Poll and the PPPC was declared the winner.
