City Constabulary complicit in sale of fruits, vegetables on ground

The City Constabulary in Guyana’s capital, Georgetown, continues to turn a blind eye to the sale of fresh fruits and vegetables on the ground.

This is now more a norm on Sundays at the corner of Regent and Bourda (Piggott) Streets, literally a stone’s throw from the City Police Outpost.

A Demerara Waves reporter Sunday morning brought this situation to a city policewoman who was at the outpost. She was told that the sale of fruits and vegetables on the ground is against the City Bylaws and that it is the duty and responsibility of the constabulary to enforce the law.

She remained seated and never went to the vendor to ask that the pumpkins be placed on a stand. The pumpkins are sold on the road a few feet from the stagnant Regent Street drain that often overflows as a result of rainfall.

This situation has been occurring for several months now.

Apart from that, the surroundings of Bourda Market are in a deplorable state with piles of garbage along the western side of the market building. There is also a heavy population of vagrants on the pavement along the eastern side of the structure.
