President Irfaan Ali on Sunday announced that Guyanese would no longer have to pay to cross the Berbice, Demerara and Linden river bridges from August 1, 2025.
He made the announcement during an address to People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP) supporters at a rally to commemorate the life of his party’s founder-leader, Dr Cheddi Jagan.
PPP General Secretary and 2nd Vice President of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo said there would be another cash grant after Guyana’s general and regional elections widely expected to be held in November. “You will get your cash grants in the future too,” he reiterated.
He said plans are also afoot to develop an investment instrument to allow recipients to deposit their grants to get a greater return.
Dr Ali had previously announced that the bridge crossings would be free, but it was only on Sunday he said when that would take effect.
The new four-lane Demerara Harbour Bridge would be completed by August 31, 2025, government had already said.
