A man was early Monday morning seen leaving the Housing Ministry’s annex compound with a haversack and white box but nothing has been reported missing or stolen, police said.
No information was provided about what could have been in the bag or box.
Investigators, according to the Guyana Police Force, said there was no sign of breakage and nothing was reported stolen.
“So far nothing has been reported missing/stolen. Police are looking for a male suspect who was captured on CCTV (closed-circuit television) footage entering and exiting the Annex compound,” police said.
Investigators have since questioned several staff members about the incident. Police said a casement window was left opened in the Information Technology Department on the middle flat of the Housing Ministry’s annex.
The incident occurred between 8 p.m. on Sunday and 7 a.m. on Monday. Detectives were told that the building is being secured on a 24-hour basis by personnel from Elite Security Service.
Police were also informed that at about 8 p.m. on Sunday, a 22-year-old office assistant employed with the Ministry of Housing secured the building and lodged the keys to the doors at the guard hut at the Ministry of Housing’s Head Office on Brickdam.
At 7 a.m. on Monday, according to police, the office assistant uplifted the keys to the building and shortly after, one of the cleaners arrived at work. She went up to the middle flat of the building where she discovered a door to one of the offices opened and office ransacked. As a result, she immediately informed the office assistant.
Detectives reviewed CCTV footage which showed that at 12:22 a.m., a man dressed in a black jersey, and green three-quarter pants on a blue BMX pedal cycle rode up from the western side of Brickdam, then turned north and stopped in front of the Ministry of Housing’s Annex. It was then observed that the male entered a compound located to the south of the Annex, and then at 00:45 hours, the suspect was observed exiting the western side of the Annex. The suspect mounted the pedal cycle with a black haversack and white box and proceeded north on United Nations place then east on Croal Street and making good his escape.
