No need to go to centres on first day, everyone will receive cash grant- Finance Ministry official

All registered Guyanese 18 years and older will receive their GY$100,000 cash grant and so there is no need for large numbers of persons to flock the centres, Finance Secretary Sukrishnalall Pasha said Friday.

“There is no need for all of them to come on the first day. We don’t want people to endure any stress,” he told Demerara Waves Online News following isolated incidents.

Mr Pasha gave the assurance that cheques would be available from now through to early March. After then, he said centres would remain open for persons to uplift their cheques. In a number of areas, officials have been calling persons to go to the designated centres to uplift their cheques.

“Most persons are coming on the first day. All want their money at the same time and the reason we sent out a schedule to do distribution on multiple days, especially in large areas, is that we wanted to give people comfort that they’ll be served,” he said.

Mr Pasha said so far, cheques have been printed for just under 600,000 verified persons. However, registration would continue for those who were unable to do so during the first cycle of registration that ran from last year to earlier this year.

The Finance Secretary said the aim is to ensure that there is “traceability for transparency”.

The Finance Ministry is expected to distribute about 260,000 cheques by the end of Friday.

Distribution centres are open in all coastal regions.
