El Salvador president to Cuba for checkup after falling ill in Mexico

Last Updated on Wednesday, 10 December 2014, 22:58 by GxMedia

Salvadoran President Salvador Sanchez Ceren
San Salvador, Dec 10 (EFE).- Salvadoran President Salvador Sanchez Ceren traveled to Cuba for “his periodic medical checkup” after suffering health problems on Monday in Mexico, the Salvadoran government said Wednesday.

“Sanchez Ceren, after suffering a slight decompensation in his health, which we will report in good time, on the recommendation of his medical team traveled to Havana, Cuba, with the aim of moving up his periodic medical checkup, which is being conducted … normally,” the Governability and Communications Secretariat said in a brief statement.

The department did not say which country the president left from for Havana, although when he fell ill he was in the Mexican city of Veracruz, where he had been scheduled to participate in the Ibero-American Summit but could not do so due to his health problems.

“After the ordinary medical checkup, the president will return to (El Salvador),” the bulletin stated without providing further information.

Because of the president’s health situation, Salvadoran Foreign Minister Hugo Martinez took charge of his agenda at the summit, which concluded on Tuesday in Veracruz.

On Tuesday, Governability and Communications Secretary Hato Hasbun told reporters that Sanchez Ceren’s health “is very good.”

“We don’t know what the reason for … this kind of illness is, from which one suffers at times. Many people have this kind of (problem),” Hasbun said, as reported by state-run Radio Nacional.

“I’m going to speak by telephone with him now (Tuesday), to see when he’ll return, but I don’t know,” he said, without specifying which country the president was in at the time.

Hasbun emphasized that “I tell you that the president is doing very well. It was certainly rest that they prescribed for him.”
