Health-care and communications professional from CARICOM member-states gathered to learn skills and strategies to better communicate regarding Ebola, influenza, dengue fever and Chikungunya.
The workshop, which ends Thursday, was organized by the Pan-American Health Organization and the World Health Organization.
The workshop follows this week’s conference of CARICOM leaders in in Trinidad and Tobago to draw up a 10-point plan against Ebola.
Heads of state and government agreed to strengthen health systems, including training, equipment, laboratories and containment, and enlist the participation of airlines in the region in transporting response teams and blood samples for testing.
The CARICOM nations also considered organizing a comprehensive resource mobilization effort that would include a “Stop Ebola There (SETH) Fund,” with “there” being the West African nations where the virus has killed around 5,000 people.
CARICOM comprises: Antigua and Barbuda; the Bahamas; Barbados; Belize; Dominica; Grenada; Guyana; Haiti; Jamaica; Montserrat; St. Lucia; St. Kitts and Nevis; St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Suriname; and Trinidad and Tobago. EFE
