Dominicans will go to the polls on December 8, 2014. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt made the announcement Wednesday afternoon in address to the nation.
He said that he has advised the President to dissolve the Parliament immediately. Nomination Day will be November 19.
Skerrit’s Dominica Labour Party (DLP) will be coming up against the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) led by Lennox Linton.

The Prime Minister also appealed to the electorate to vote in a manner that will ensure that diplomatic relations with China, Venezuela and Morocco that are funding a number of projects in Dominica, an Eastern Caribbean island with a population of 71,000 persons.
Skerrit indicated that he would be banking on his administration’s track record of improved social services and investments in geo-thermal energy. He restated that France would be injecting more financing in that project that would see the English-speaking nation supplying energy to neighbouring Martinique and Guadeloupe.
Major issues include alleged corruption, drug-money for campaign financing and the state of the economy.
The UWP has reiterated its concerns about the failure of the Elections Office to re-register residents of the former British colony and issue voter identification cards.
Skerrit’s governing Dominica Labour Party won general elections in May 2005. Campaigning on a pledge to increase the minimum wage and attract foreign investment, Mr Skerrit and the DLP were re-elected by a landslide in December 2009.
The incumbent DLP has 18 seats and the UWP three.
