St. Lucia says pact with university will improve food security

San Juan, Nov 3 (EFE).- The government of St. Lucia will sign a memorandum of understanding with a university in Barbados to collaborate on projects of food security, biodiversity and exploration of natural resources.

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology said in a statement that the goal of the agreement is to develop cooperation with the Center for Food Security and Entrepreneurship at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus in Barbados.

“The Government of Saint Lucia has long indicated its interest in developing a Green Economy initiative, and has been working closely with the United Nations Environment Program and the University of the West Indies to achieve this objective,” the statement said.

The Caribbean island – with a population of about 170,000 people – has worked on systems “for bio-safety management to protect human and animal health and the environment from any possible negative impacts of genetically modified organisms.”

St. Lucia’s natural resources “hold much potential for exploration and development of new products, services and industries,” the statement said. EFE
