San Juan, Oct 29 (EFE).- Chef Mario Pagan will represent Puerto Rico on Nov. 22 at the Barefoot Gourmet Soirée, an international culinary event to be held in the British Virgin Islands.

“I’ve never had the chance to participate in this event, and so I’m honored and very grateful. As a Puerto Rican, our rich culture already gives us plenty of flavor but this event will help me broaden my horizons on the food culture of the other islands in the region,” Pagan told Efe on Wednesday.

He said he will prepare one of the five main courses at the event on Peter Island during Restaurant Week.

“All proceeds will go to a student interested in pursuing a career in tourism,” Pagan representative Efrain Rivera confirmed to Efe.

Pagan will work with renowned chefs Roshni Gurnani, executive chef and professor at The Art Institute of Houston, and Erika Dupree Davis, creative director of Greycliff Chocolatier in the Bahamas.

Also, two local chefs will join the group asked to create main courses by mixing traditional ingredients from their home countries with those of the British Virgin Islands.

After the event, Pagan plans to continue developing his culinary skills at his restaurants, including Laurel, which he launched recently in San Juan.

“My future continues to be cooking and love for it and I hope to continue delighting all my clients in Laurel,” Pagan said.

The British Virgin Islands will hold its third edition of Restaurant Week starting Nov. 14. The culinary festival promotes the preparation of breakfast, lunch and dinner courses by local and international chefs.
