Grandmother jailed for attempting to post cocaine to Spain

Last Updated on Saturday, 18 October 2014, 0:00 by GxMedia

Sandra Daniels
A Guyanese grandmother of 15 was Friday jailed and fined for attempting to post a quantity of cocaine to Spain earlier this year.

Sandra Daniels,50, of Lot 2 Dennis Street, Sophia, Greater Georgetown was sentenced to five years imprisonment and fined GUY$738,000 by City Magistrate, Judy Latchman.

Daniels was convicted for being in possession of 274 grammes of cocaine at the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPHC), Georgetown for the purpose of trafficking.

Customs Anti Narcotics (CANU) agents say she had gone with a carton of beauty items such as false nails, nail decoration and 42 buffers to post to Plaza de Octubre, Valencia, Spain.

Agents said the cocaine was sealed in plastic and placed in the middle of each buffer.

She had told CANU agents back then that a close male friend from Spain had visited Guyana two weeks before and had asked her to mail the items to him.

Daniels was previously convicted in the United Kingdom for drug trafficking and she was deported after serving 33 months imprisonment there.

Defence Counsel Todd urged the court to turn a blind eye to Daniels’ previous conviction and take into consideration that she is the guardian of 15 grandchildren.

Magistrate Latchman upraided the convict for failing be a role model for the grand children.
