A 24-year old woman was Monday jailed for stealing more than GUY$3 million from the Child Maintenance Department of the Georgetown Magistratesā€™ Court while she was a cashier there three years ago.

Tiffany Peters of Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara was convicted  for stealing GUY$3,045,000 between February 7, 2012 and September 11, 2012.

She was jailed for 60 months.

Her lawyer, Adrian Thompson, told the court that he was instructed by his client that she would appeal the decision by City Magistrate, Judy Latchman.

Speaking for herself, the woman denied committing the offence. She said no handwriting assessment was conducted to determine whether she had altered receipts and other records and taken monies belonging to the State of Guyana. The court was told that amounts on affiliation and maintenance cards were not altered unlike several of the daily basis amounts.

Peters sought to implicate the supervisor by saying that he would usually approve documents that she had prepared. She said she was neither the first nor the last person to have handled monies on a daily basis.

The prosecution relied heavily on several witnesses including clerks, a supervisor and the then Principal Clerk.
