One of three Venezuelans, who were arrested allegedly with unlicensed guns, ammunition and narcotics at Arakaka, North West District, on Tuesday pleaded guilty to the offences and was sentenced to six years imprisonment, police said.
The Guyana Police Force said Eliezer Vera was sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined GY$58,230 for being in possession of 64.7 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined GY$99,600 for being in possession of 66.4 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Those two sentences are to run concurrently.
He was sentenced to two years imprisonment for being in possession two Beretta pistols and one Glock pistol without licences, and one year imprisonment for being in possession of 25 rounds of ammunition without a licence. Those two sentences are consecutive.
Appearing before City Magistrate, Dylon Bess, Romel Marin and Alirio Jimenez pleaded not guilty and the cases against them were adjourned to November 13 for the start of the trial. Disclosure is expected to be done by November 09, 2023.
Police said at about 5:27 PM on Friday, October 20, 2023, diligent efforts by lawmen at the Arakaka Police Station led to the arrest of the the three Venezuelan men.
