Appearing before City Magistrate, Judy Latchman, the 39-year old Persaud of 26 Sheriff Street, Campbelville was granted GUY$1.5 million bail.
The bail was originally set at GUY$2 million but it was reduced after Defence Lawyer, Glen Hanoman told the court that Persaud was saddled with medical expenses and assistance to the family of the deceased with funeral expenses.
He was ordered to return to court on October 3.
Particulars of the charge are that on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Lamaha Street, Newtown-Kitty, Georgetown he allegedly drove motor car PKK 5501 in a manner that was dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Leon Hunte , 55, of Stone Avenue, Blygezight, Georgetown.
Hanoman sought to convince the court that his client would appear in court for his trial. Hanoman noted that after Persaud self-discharged himself from hospital surrendered to Kitty Police Station to assist in the probe.
Hanoman said his client was not a flight risk and was in possession of a medical certificate that states the injuries he sustained. The lawyer said his client has to return to hospital for a CT Scan.
Police Prosecutor, Vishnu Hunte did not oppose bail and requested three weeks for statements to be filed.
The short facts of the prosecution’s case are that about 11:115 PM, Persaud was driving east along Lamaha Street at a fast rate of speed when he collided with Hunte who was riding a pedal cycle in the same direction. Hunte was pitched some distance away.
