Granger’s position on local, general elections “ambiguous and contradictory” – Ramotar

President Donald Ramotar on Thursday called on Opposition Leader David Granger to state exactly what is his party’s position, in the wake of his call for Local Government Elections (LGE) followed by a re-commitment to the no-confidence motion that could lead to early general elections.

“Unfortunately, the position represented in your letter and the positions expressed by your Party after my receipt of your letter are both ambiguous and contradictory. 

In the circumstances, before I can properly respond to your letter, I wish for you to clarify what precisely is your Party’s position,” stated the President to the Chairman of the parliamentary coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

Granger earlier this week wrote Ramotar giving him until Monday, September 15, 2014 to call LGE immediately or face the prospect of a local and international campaign to ensure government complies with the constitution and the relevant local government legislation.

After the Alliance For Change (AFC) called APNU’s position strange and questioned why that stance in light of the impending no-confidence motion, Granger’s coalition issued a statement saying that it “has committed itself to supporting the ‘No Confidence’ motion against the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration. There is no change from that position.” APNU further added that its call on Ramotar to put in train steps to call LGE “is in no way contradictory, but rather complimentary of our stated position regarding local democracy and respect for the Constitution of Guyana,”

In calling on the Opposition Leader to explain his party’s position, the President told him that “, I consider your views as important in our nation’s democratic equation.”

The Guyanese Leader also seized the opportunity to tell Granger that there was no need to remind him about upholding Guyana’s Constitution and about the importance of democracy because the People’s Progressive Party administration has always defended, advocated and promoted constitutionality, the rule of law and democracy at every level in Guyana.
