PNCR’s youth arm elects new chairman

The Guyana Youth and Student Movement, the youth arm of the Peoples National Congress Reform today (9th August 2014) held it Biennial Congress at the Party’s Headquarters Sophia. The Congress was held under the theme “One Movement, One Partnership, One Nation,” the PNCR said in a statement.

In his farewell address to congress outgoing National Chairman Mr. Christopher Jones MP said that the Peoples Progressive Party Civic administration has failed the youth of Guyana. Jones said, “the PPPC had failed to provide jobs, failed to govern in the interest of all the peoples of Guyana, failed to have a national youth policy, the PPPC in government has been a failure.”

Chairman of the PNCR Mr. Basil Williams delivered the feature address to the Congress. In his remarks, Williams told the members of the party’s youth arm that they must be prepared for the task ahead. The Party Chairman said that the youth are the vanguard of the party and with General and Regional elections looming the energy and imagination of the youth was vital. He told them that A Partnership for National Unity will contest in every community in Guyana. Williams reminded his audience that the majority of the electorate in the upcoming elections will be young people and it was necessary that the GYSM have a seat at the decision making table. He said that the youth must be decision makers and not just order takers.

In Elections that were held a new national executive was elected. Ryan Belgrave was elected to serve as National Chairman.

In his acceptance speech Belgrave said that his task was to make the GYSM the leading youth organization in Guyana. He said that this will be achieved by aggressive and continuous Mobilization, Organization, Registration and Education. Belgrave said that education was the greatest tool to fight tyranny. He charged members of the GYSM to seek knowledge, to get educated. Belgrave said “the PPPC was afraid of an educated nation.”  A new twenty-four person General Council was also elected to serve for the next two years.
