Prison escapee caught in gold-bearing Omai

Last Updated on Saturday, 21 June 2014, 19:28 by GxMedia

CAUGHT: Keron Cummings
A prison escapee was Saturday morning caught in the gold-bearing area of Omai, Essequibo, police said.

Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Senior Superindent Leslie James told Demerara Waves Online News that police got a tip-off that persons of ill reputation were in the area.

He said initially police did not know that 26-year old Keron Cummings of Sophia was “holed up” at Omai.  James said the fugitive “did not put up any resistance.”  “He was seeking refuge there,” said James. A number of small-scale illegal gold miners and other persons are in the Omai area, despite a crackdown.

Cummings was one of four prisoners who had escaped from the lock-ups at the Georgetown Magistrate Courts on May 19, 2014. He is facings several robbery charges.

Twenty-eight year old Vickram Persaud was shot dead during an alleged armed confrontation with police at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice short;y after his escape. One .38 revolver was found in his possession.  Randolph Marks, who is accused of shooting a Patsan employee, Bharat Ramcharran, during the course of a robbery, was captured under a bed in a house at Albouystown, Georgetown.

Steven Bacchus of  Block ‘E’ Sophia who has been charged with the murder of Constable Quincy Wright in January, 2014, was nabbed moments after he fled through a hole at the lock-ups.
