A policeman attached to the Den Amstel Police Station was Saturday under close arrest after he was caught during a sting operation when he had allegedly gone to collect the remainder of a bribe from a man he had arrested one day earlier.
The probe into “corrupt transaction” is being conducted by the Police Office of Professional Responsibility.
Police said that during Friday, June 13, the policeman arrested a man after a report of threatening language had been made against him.
Guyana Police Force spokesman, Ivelaw Whittaker said that later in the evening the cop allegedly arranged with the man to settle the matter for a sum of money. The man paid over a part of the agreed sum and was released from custody to go and get the remainder.
Whittaker related that the man informed senior police officials and the rank was later caught in a sting that was set up.
