Guyana Friday night recorded its first reported domestic violence-related death with the killing of a mother of two by her common-law husband.
The dead woman has been identified as Malaika Adams of Dazzell Scheme, Paradise, East Coast Demerara.
The suspect, Paul Scotland of Mahaica Squatting Area, surrendered at the Enmore Police Station and he was later transferred to the Cove and John Police Station.
The circumstances that led to the killing of the mother of two were not immediately clear.
Police sources said the two had an argument and Scotland picked up a knife and stabbed her.
More than one dozen women were killed last year during domestic disputes. The last for 2013 was the gunning down of 20-year old Carlissa Matthews by her estranged partner, Jermaine Maynard, Old Year’s Night on Water Street, Georgetown.
He was subsequently arrested by police at Springlands Back-Track, Corentyne moments before he was about to leave Guyana illegally for neighbouring Suriname.
