Woman gunned down Old Year’s Night

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:00 by GxMedia

Carlissa Matthews

Guyana Tuesday night- Old Year’s Night- recorded what might have been its last reported homicide when a man shot his female companion in her head, police said.

She is 20 year old Carlissa Matthews of North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

The incident occurred near KFC, Water Street, Stabroek about 11:45 PM.

Investigators were told that Matthews. a former student of North Ruimveldt Multilateral School, and a man with whom she shares a relationship had a misunderstanding earlier.

“She was standing on Water Street when the man came up and shot her to her head and escaped,” police said.

Police were still searching for the suspected killer whose name has been given as Jermaine Maynard of Cross Street, Georgetown.

A relative said Matthews was standing with her mother and he called her across the road, lit two squibs and shot the woman to her head.

The relative said the man had recently threatened to kill her because she had told him that she had ended the relationship.

Matthews, a mother of a five year old son, had been advised to report the threat to the police but it is unclear whether she had done so.

Matthews had been charged last October with unlawfully inflicting grievous bodily harm on Maynard. However, the case was dismissed after he declined to give evidence agains her.

Maynard usually has his left hand in a sling due to an injury.
