Four arraigned for multi-million $ Shamdas Kirpalani robbery

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:00 by GxMedia

Three men and one woman were Friday arraigned for a GUY$17.2 million robbery committed on a man who was carrying the money that belonged to Shamdas Kirpalani Store.

Two of the men were granted bail while the others were remanded to prison until January 14, 2014.

Howard Rambharose, Rajesh Singh and Alistair Naughton were not required to plea to the indictable charge that they on December 20 at Georgetown, being armed with a gun, robbed Store Manager, Mahesh Chitranie of GUY$17,250,000 property of Shamdas Kirplani. Joan Persaud was charged with receiving GUY$370,000 knowing same to be stolen property.

Police Prosecutor, Bharrat Mangru said that Singh, who was employed by Kirpalani, was given the money to deposit at the Bank of Baroda. He and Chitranie took the money and boarded the store’s vehicle to take the money to the bank. However, they were held at gunpoint by Rambarose and Naughton who grabbed the money and escaped.

Despite objection by the prosecution on grounds of seriousness and prevalence of the offence, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry  granted Singh GUY$500,000 bail and Persaud GUY$100,000 bail.
