Shotgun ammo intercepted in Georgetown Prison

A man was Monday morning arrested after prison wardens found a number of shotgun cartridges in shoes that were being taken for an inmate of the Georgetown Prison, according to well-placed sources.

Kelon Benjamin,29, of Station Street, Kitty, Georgetown was handed over to police after prison authorities completed their investigation.

Preliminary information reaching Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com ) is that shortly before noon Benjamin went to visit his cousin at the maximum security prison.

Moments later, he had subjected a bag containing a number of items to  a security check. During that process, two 12 gauge shotgun cartridges were found in the left side of one pair of footwear.

Benjamin told prison and police investigators that perhaps someone with whom he works in the interior might have mistakenly placed the ammunition.

Depending on the outcome of the probe, Benjamin could soon be charged with illegal possession of ammunition.
