GPL employee killed by ex wife’s fiance

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:00 by GxMedia

One man was killed and the murder suspect seriously injured following a quarrel Sunday night, sources said.

Dead is 42-year old Carl Garnette of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown. Hospital sources said he was stabbed four times to his chest and abdomen and one to his right side back.

Garnette worked in the Maintenance Department of the Guyana Power Light Inc. (GPL).

The murder suspect, 32-year old Akeem Jones 8 Clifford Avenue, Lamaha Springs (Joint Services Housing Scheme), Georgetown, was up to late Sunday night receiving emergency treatment for several stab wounds about his body.

Jones was expected to be admitted under police guard at the Male Medical Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

The Guyana Police Force at 10:58 PM said the incident occured atabout 6:45 PM when Garnette, who was armed with a cutlass, confronted a man who is having a relationship with his wife from whom he is separated. During the altercation Garnette chopped the man about his body and was fatally stabbed.

Investigators visited the scene and were expected to retrieve the murder weapon, a cutlass, from a bench under a tree.

One of Garnette’s family members said after a brief telephone conversation, Garnette went across to Jones’ residence where an argument ensued and they wounded each other.

Initial information is that Garnette called at Jones’ residence to speak with one of his children. Garnette’s ex wife, with whom he has four children, is Jones’ fiancé.

Sources said police could have responded earlier to the crime scene but when someone called the La Penitence Police Station and reported the incident, the caller was told to report the matter to Alberttown Police Station.
