ACCUSED COCAINE MULE: Shellon Kandhai

A 32- year old woman allegedly caught attempting to smuggle more than five pounds of cocaine to the United States (US) on Monday pleaded not guilty on her arraignment.

She is Shellon Kandhai of 5 Railway Road, Industry, East Coast Demerara.

The mother of six denied having the narcotic in her possession for the purpose of trafficking at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on November 16. But CANU Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah said that on her way to CANU’s headquarters on the day in question he asked for “a chance”.

City Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty refused Kandhai bail and remanded her to prison until November 27.

Agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) said the cocaine was found in the false bottom of a suitcase that belonged to the woman.

Massiah said Kandhai was an outgoing passenger on a Caribbean Airlines flight when an anti-drug agent spotted a “peculiar object” in the suitcase and flagged it for further inspection.

Massiah said the woman told CANU agents that she had personally packed the suitcase.
