A former Second Lieutenant of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was gunned down early Saturday morning outside a popular night club.
He has been identified as 23-year old Denzil Mingo of Third Street, Alberttown, Georgetown.
The shooting occurred about 4 AM in front of the Edge Night Club, Main Street, Georgetown. At the time of the attack, Mingo was preparing to drive off a white Toyota Allion car.
Earlson Murray, 23, of Norton Street, Wortmanville who was also in the vehicle was injured by bullets and was hospitalised. Another occupant, Joseph Barker of Fifth Street, Alberttown, was apparently not struck.
Police said two men opened fire on the car with Mingo and company.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants in the drive-by shooting used high-powered guns, causing club patrons to dash for safety. “A lot of people were running for cover when that nonsense happened. I really don’t know what is wrong with some people,” someone who was at the scene told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com).
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Back in 2011, he was accused of spitting on a police officer and assaulting three others. That incident was related to the assault of radio announcer Nerissa Pearson in Georgetown. At the time of the fracas with Pearson, he should have been in New Amsterdam where he had been a base commander.
One year earlier, he and another man had been charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Clive Atwell in Alberttown.
