13 arrested in connection with Wakenaam, Meten-Meer-Zorg banditry

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:01 by GxMedia

The riverside backyard of the Dhanaysures residence at Wakenaam.
Thirteen suspects were Monday arrested and one handgun seized in connection with two recent armed attacks that left one person dead and another injured.

Deputy Police Commissioner, Seelall Persaud said a 9MM handgun and six rounds of ammunition were found in possession of one of the men who is a boat operator.

Investigators believed that several of those arrested might have participated in the armed robbery committed on Anand Dhanaysure’s residence at Wakenaam Island, Essequibo River.  The probe teams also suspect that they might be linked to the September 11 gunning down of 27-year old Vijay Namdar in his shop at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara. His motjer was beaten before she handed over a bag containing important documents and an estimated GUY$1 million.

Persaud, who is Guyana’s Chief of Criminal Investigations, told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com) that the same intelligence was used to kill one suspected bandit and the arrest of three others at Meten-Meer-Zorg mid Monday morning.

He said police were yet to arrest a fourth man who escaped into a nearby cemetery

Police said around 10 AM Monday, they acted on information and intercepted two cars with several men at Kastev Housing Scheme. Police alleged that two of the four men, who exited the cars, had handguns drawn. Police said when they confronted them, the men discharged a number of rounds.

Police returned fire, killing Kirk Bacchus of Paradise Village, East Coast Demerara.
