A labourer, who allegedly threw a bag with marijuana and other prohibited items, over the Georgetown Prison fence Monday night was arrested and would be charged shortly, police said.
The incident occurred at about 9:30PM when a policeman observed the man with a “bulky bag which he swiftly threw over the north-eastern fence of the prison and attempted to flee the area.
The Guyana Police Force said the man was promptly arrested by the policeman and a search revealed several prohibited items in the bag.
“Shortly after, Prison Officers retrieved the bag and found it to contain a number of prohibited items inclusive of 10 packs of cigarettes, a cellular phone and 793 grams of cannabis (marijuana).
Police said he is cooperating with investigators and is likely to appear in court soon.
Although several searches of that jail by police and prison service personnel have uncovered large amounts of prohibited items including drugs, cellular phones, homemade wine, and improvised weapons,; the inmates appear quite organised in replenishing their stocks.
