Former Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall was Thursday indicted on a charge of alleged larceny by bailey.
He was granted self-bail by Magistrate Fabayo Azore and ordered to return to court on May 8, 2017. He was not required to plea the indictable charge.
Prosecutor Attorney-at-Law, Patrice Henry did not oppose bail.
Nandlall was charged with larceny by bailee as Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs of 14 Commonwealth Law Reports valued at GYD $2.3 million.
Magistrate Fabayo Azore said the charge stated that Nandlall obtained the property fraudulently and took or acquired the reports for his ownership.
Prosecutor Henry said he is expecting two other statements.
Defence Lawyer, Glenn Hanoman asked for self-bail, saying that it would be too late and difficult to find such a large amount of money that is acceptable downstairs at the Magistrates’ court.
Hanoman asked that whatever statements are in possession of the prosecution be handed over.
The Defence lawyer asked Magistrate Azore to note that the Constitutional Court of the High Court has been called to determine ownership of the law reports.
Nandlall has already secured a High Court conservatory order preventing police from seizing the law reports on the grounds of deprivation of his property.
He cited a letter by former President Donald Ramotar who had said in a letter that he had granted permission for the Guyana government to take over subscription of the publications.
Nandlall also stated that the Auditor General had found no discrepancies in the deal.
