A senior officer of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was early Thursday morning killed as he was returning from an event at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice to usher in African Emancipation Day, officials said.

Dead is Sub-Officer, Linden Mc Almont who was based at the Central Fire Station headquarters in Georgetown where he had been responsible for Quarter Master Stores.

He was 47.

56-year old Keith Bond of Grove, East Bank Demerara, who was with him, has been seriously injured and was Thursday expected to be transferred to a city hospital.

DemWaves was told that Mc Almont and his friend were returning from the annual soiree (swaree) at Fort Wellington. He was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said Investigations have revealed that the two men were occupants in a motor car, when the driver lost control and crashed into a utility pole on the Bath Settlement Public Road.

“This has shaken me up. The entire fire service is devastated,” said Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle.

Police said the driver of the car has been arrested and was assisting police with investigations.

Mc Almont was a member of the Linden Constabulary that had been also responsible for fire fighting in the bauxite mining town. After Linden Mining Enterprise (LINMINE) became defunct, he joined the GFS.

The fire officer was from Hopetown, West Coast Berbice.

Mc Almont’s death followed Wednesday’s accidents involving two fire tenders, one at Diamond East Bank Demerara and another at Linden. No one was injured.
