Four gold miners, who went missing for four days while searching for new mining grounds deep in the jungle, were Tuesday evening rescued in a weakened condition.

The team was led by dredge owner, Earl Fletchman. The names of the other miners were not immediately available.

Rescue of the men has almost certainly brought a sigh of relief to not only them but their families who had became increasingly worried after only the abandoned All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) had been found Sunday afternoon. “It is good. we feel relieved . The community feels relieved that they found them,” Ronaldo Roddrigues, a miner and businessman, told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com).

The miners left Port Kaituma last Friday on a more than 60-mile journey to Monassee and since then they had not been seen or heard of.

Well-placed sources said that two of the men who first found were very weak. They told a police search party that their two other colleagues were sitting down in a track because they were much weaker.

The men were due to be taken to a nearby medical facility for check-ups and rehydration. Initial reports are that they have already begun eating.

Associates said the quartet had embarked on the journey without food or a GPS.
