A policeman, who allegedly concocted an account about how his shooting of a bicycle repairman earlier this year, had his story back fire on him and he is now facing three charges.
27-year old Constable Ocquana Dawson was Wednesday arraigned for discharging a loaded firearm with intent to injure, illegal possession of ammunition and damage to property.
He pleaded not guilty and his lawyer, Lyndon Amsterdam argued that remanding his client would put him at risk of being assaulted by criminals who knew him in his capacity as a law enforcement officer in certain matters.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry refused the accused bail and remanded him to prison until June 21 for the filing of statements.
The prosecution’s case is that on February 18 , 2013 at Globe Yard, Waterloo Street, Dawson allegedly discharged the firearm with intent to injure Phillip “Skinny” Small. The man was shot to his right thigh.
At that time Small and eyewitnesses had vehemently denied that he had attacked a member of the police force’s Tactical Services Unit (TSU).
The prosecution alleges that Dawson had discharged three of the 15 rounds of ammunition that had been issued to him. However, he returned with 14 and checks later revealed that three of the rounds were not issued by the police force.
The court was also told that it was the policeman and not Small who had damaged the bullet proof vest.
