Vending on Merriman’s Mall suspended

The Georgetown City Council Monday announced that vending on the Merriman’s Mall between Orange Walk and Cummings Street has been suspended for one week to allow vendors to clean up the area.

“The Council observed that the area is very untidy. This is inconsistent with the vision to make Georgetown clean and green. The Council would be giving the vendors who operate in the area a one week ultimatum to put themselves in order, before they can operate in the area,” the City Council said in a statement.

The temporary halt to vending begins January 4, 2016,

According to City Hall, the wholesale vendors who operate in that vicinity were invited to a meeting with the Clerk of Markets, Mayor and Town Clerk and agreed to a number of conditions.  Those include that all stalls would be of one colour and size for uniformity The vendors, in turn, want adequate lighting, toilet facilities and security to be provided.

Town Clerk Royston King said the vendors must comply with decision of Council as the municipality was in the process of rehabilitating all of its facilities.

Georgetown is Guyana’s capital city.
