Fearless criminals acting with “impunity”, disrespect- PSC Chairman

Despite claims to the contrary, Chairman of the Private Sector Commission (PSC)  Retired Major General Norman McLean says that it is time the Guyana Police Force take a more strategic approach to the manner in which crime is handled in Guyana.

McLean, a former Chief-of-Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF),  was speaking at a conference on Friday where he presented a booklet detailing several policies and strategies that could be implement by the police force to address crime.

The former policeman stated that while police officials have repeatedly stated that crime is not on the rise, one cannot evade the situation that persists whereby people are fearful for their lives.

The booklet titled “Strategies for the reduction of crime in Guyana” is to be presented to the Guyana Police Force sometime next week, according to McLean.

“We cannot expect it to be adopted wholesale but it should be discussed debated and considered by the police,” he stated.

It was noted too that the criminals seem to be sending a message to everyone that they can do as they please fearlessly.

Mclean contended that while the police force has made some headway, people are still living in fear and more must be done.

“The PSC is greatly concerned over what we perceive as the hype in crimes and we are left to wonder who is next. Crimes of violence are being conducted with impunity and little regard for life and no respect or fear of the police and the consequence of their action,” said McLean added.

Guyana’s President, David Granger earlier this week rubbished calls by his predecessor, Donald Ramotar, for soldiers to be called out to quell an escalation in crime. The Guyana Police Force has also denied that violent crome is out of control.
