Georgetown Hub Champions Mental Health project in Essequibo

Last Updated on Monday, 9 November 2015, 2:19 by GxMedia

Beginning in November, the Global Shapers Community Georgetown Hub will be championing a Mental Health project in a bid to address pressing issues which affect the life of almost every Guyanese.

The project, “Mental Health Yourself”, aims to increase awareness of mental health, improve understanding of mental health issues and develop support systems for those who live in communities with high levels of mental health issues. Special focus will be placed on addressing Concurrent Disorders, Suicide Prevention and Coping Mechanism.

Among the agencies which have agreed to collaborate with the Georgetown Hub on this project are the Ministry of Public Health, Pan American Health Organization, CUSO International, Georgetown Public Hospital and several other nongovernmental and youth organizations.

Mental Health Yourself will see the execution of a series of workshops over a course of two months within target village in Region 2. Here is a schedule of the workshops: Abrams Zuil November 14-15 , Anna Regina November 28-29
and Charity December 12-13

Abdel Fudadin, Dr. William AduKrow and Dr. Melissa Varskwyk are among the featured facilitators. The Hub encourages anyone who is interested in partnering on Mental Health Yourself to reach to them by contacting project champion Raiza Khan,  raizatkhan@gmail.com or via cell 6465156.

Over the past year, the Hub has launched a library in South Pattensen, Sophia, successfully executed its 3rd Annual Stationery Drive (Headstart) which provided school supplies to over 600 students in hinterland communities, partnered with other youth NGOs for leadership sessions, hosted a Communications Workshop.

They just held their first ever “Blingo Bingo with a Twist” fundraiser, November 6, 2015 at the National Park. This fundraiser aimed to raise funds for the Mental Health Yourself Project and other projects for 2016.

The Global Shapers Community is the first, truly global youth network that is focussed on improving the state of the world. It is an initiative of the World Economic Forum.

The World Economic Forum is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the worldby engaging business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas. Incorporated as a not-for notforprofit foundation in 1971 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the Forum is tied to no political, partisan or national interests (www.weforum.org )
