Seasoned Guyanese diplomat selected to return to Caracas as ambassador

Last Updated on Wednesday, 16 September 2015, 20:11 by GxMedia

Ambassador Cheryl Miles
Experienced career diplomat, Ambassador Marilyn Cheryl Miles could soon return to Venezuela as Guyana’s top envoy if the Nicolas Maduro administration lifts its suspension to grant approval for her to take up the post.

A well-placed source told Demerara Waves Online News that Miles’ name has been submitted to Venezuela for its approval. But President Maduro, citing recent remarks by Guyana’s Foreign Minister Carl Greenidge in the United States (US), has ordered a halt to the processing of the application.

“It is nonsense to initiate the diplomatic way of regularization, the appointment and admission of ambassadors and suddenly go to the United States to launch attacks against Venezuela,” Maduro was quoted as saying by Prensa Latina news agency.

Other sources said Guyana has not received any formal indication, other  than media reports, that Venezuela has opted to delay giving the green light for Miles to return to Caracas.

She previously served as Guyana’s Ambassador to Venezuela from 1985 to 1992. She then returned to Georgetown and was appointed Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a post she held from 1993 to 1999.

Ambassador Miles then served as Guyana’s Ambassador to Brazil from 1999 to 2009 when she formally ended ties with Guyana’s foreign service.

Ambassador Miles currently resides in the United States.  She also speaks Spanish, Portuguese and French.
